  • My stylist says it's okay to let my relaxer burn, is this true?

As stylists, we have a responsibility to our clients to give the best hair care services possible, as well as to dispel some of the myths of hair care.  Such as, “leave the relaxer on longer since it isn't burning or burning sensation of a relaxer means it’s processing.” A stylist should always use a timer when applying chemical.   When the relaxer starts irritating you, it means your scalp is sensitive or allergic to sodium hydroxide. After this service your stylist should switch you to another type of relaxer. Remember: an open wound and additional products added to open flesh may create serious problems in the future.

I heard relaxers are linked to cancer, is this true?
Studies have proven this is not true.  Please see article.  Cancer

How do you feel about wigs?

I think wigs are great.  Sometimes they pull you out of a tight jam.  However, it should NOT be worn everyday.  Ponder this:  How would you feel if you woke up one day and did not have any hair?  What if you developed  alopecia?  What if you lost your hair to chemotherapy?  What do you think your first response would be?  Did you say, I MISS MY HAIR?

When teaching classes people often ask me what I think about wigs and my response is alway,  "you are a stylist teach your clients how to love and care for their hair."  If you are a consumer, "learn as much as you can about your hair.  Ask you stylist many questions.  Even they one YOU think is silly."  Why?  Because there will come a time, due to age or illness that you will experience hair lost.  That is the perfect time to where a wig.

Now, if you must wear a wig, make sure you shampoo/condition one a week and have your ends trim every six weeks.

It's okay to wear extensions also.  But do it in moderation.

    Hope this helps.

What is the purpose of eye liner?
The purpose of eyeliner is to draw attention to the eyes.  If the right color is used, eyeliner will get the attention of stangers.  Never put eyeliner to the inside rim of the eyes.  Although is looks good it may cause and eye infection.

How long should I wait to relax my hair after I have had it perm. colored?

The rule is to wait two(2) weeks after  any chemical service.  However, I like wait an additional week as a precaution.  Your stylist knows how much your hair can stand.  Have him/her be the final judge.

What is the difference in dandruff and dry scalp?
Dry scalp can be taken cared of with a good system of shampoo and conditioner. Such as the Dry and Itchy system by Keracare. Dandruff is a serious health issue and requires medical attention and prescribed medication. The 'flakes' are actually oily, not dry. If you are experiencing this see a dermatologist immediately. Very very few people have actual dandruff.

Besides, overprocessing with chemicals what else would cause hair loss or thinning?
Your hair could be thinning for any number of reasons or combination of reasons, and without a thorough consultation, it impossible to tell which is which with any degree of certainty. In general terms, some of the most common reasons for hair loss or thinning are: genetics, diseases, poor nutrition, stress and even medications, but by far the most common cause of hair loss in men and women is hereditary male and female pattern baldness or 'androgenic alopecia.' This accounts for 99% of all prematurely thinning or balding scalps. How do I get my lips to look like J-Lo?

Line your lips with a warm brown liner and use a flesh tone (beige, soft pink) lipstick and sealed with a clear gloss.

What is the best way to grow out a short cut?
Most women want their tresses long and free flowing in the fall/winter and short and sassy in the spring/summer. The problem is, hair only grows about half an inch (1.25cm) per month. With normal hair growth, it works out to about six inches (15 cm) per year. With proper conditioning and trimming your tresses will grow out healthy and beautiful. Remember to let your stylist know if there has been a change in your diet, or if you are taking any medication. This might interfere with normal hair growth. In the mean time, keep your nape area tapered neatly. At times you may get a little discouraged and want to cut it off. Be patient. Try some hi-lites, flip, spikes or even commercial hairpieces. And visit your stylist every week or bi-weekly. If you have any question feel to call me at 704-752-6155 or email me at nufaces13@aol.com . Tonya Stokes
